Intel and Zinc Matrix Power: Joint Development of New Batteries
Currently, many companies offer alternatives to those used in electronic
devices lithium-ion batteries, alkaline and nickel-metal hydride
power supplies. The most fashionable technology is certainly fuel
methanol powered power supplies.
Intel signs an agreement to jointly develop zinc oxide
batteries, with Zinc Matrix Power, company,
has already developed prototypes of this kind of solutions – they will be demonstrated
on the Intel Developers Forum this September. As the sources point out,
citing ZMP officials, batch production of sources
new type of catering will begin in 2021.
According to the CEO of ZMP, the power of a laptop’s lithium-ion battery
is 275-285 W per liter of electrolyte, the solutions offered by the company are almost
twice as powerful. The capacity of prototypes produced in the ZMP laboratory is
about 600 Wh. Although the company’s batteries are safer than lithium-ion batteries,
there are two major problems: first, as the oxide cell is discharged
zinc oxide dissolves in the electrolyte and spreads throughout the internal
battery volume. Recharging such a battery requires reformation of the oxide
zinc to the original structure . Secondly, before recharging, zinc will react
with water, which will lead to the formation of oxygen and hydrogen, the latter will “absorb” water from the electrolyte, which over time will lead to a decrease in the battery to overcharge.
To prevent this problem, ZMP uses special polymers that
“traps” zinc and zinc oxide inside a specially designed matrix.
The main area of cooperation between the companies is seen in the discussion with engineers,
developed Centrino, battery requirements. Currently ZMP
has already conducted “field tests” of its technology – batteries of a new
type used in the Casio 2500 PDA. The funny thing is that zinc oxide batteries
benefit from “floating charging” (the situation is familiar to owners of cellular
phones that come across the term “accelerated charging” here and there).
But if, in the case of lithium ion batteries, such handling of the battery is considered
as a mockery, the cell of the new ZMP batteries has such a charge
positive effect – at least this is the conclusion reached by the engineers who “ran” the batteries through 1500 “accelerated charging” cycles.
