Jabber core standards adopted as RFCs

Perhaps some readers have already read the message, for those,
who have not done so yet, please be informed that the Internet Engineering Task Force is officially
published the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) specifications
as RFC. The documents set as standards were originally
developed by the Jabber community in 1999; over the past two years over
members of the Extensible Messaging and Presence Working Group worked as new RFCs.

The four new standards are:

  • RFC 3920:
    Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP): Core – Technology Basics
    messaging using XML, international support issues raised
    and security issues; used by Jabber-enabled applications
  • RFC 3921:
    Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP): Instant Messaging and Presence
    – basic extensions of “Internet pagers”, includes work with contact lists,
    statuses, “black lists”
  • RFC 3922:
    Mapping the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) to Common Presence
    and Instant Messaging (CPIM) – XMPP mapping within an abstract
    IETF messaging syntax
  • RFC 3923:
    End-to-End Signing and Object Encryption for the Extensible Messaging and
    Presence Protocol (XMPP) – Security Extension

Jabber is an open protocol using XML for fast messaging
and presence information between any two subscribers on the Internet. The first
the use of Jabber technology was the emergence of an asynchronous and extensible platform
for instant messaging and instant messaging networks (from
English. IM – Instant Messaging), similar in capabilities to commercial systems
IMs such as AIM, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo. However, Jabber has several advantages
compared to commercial IM systems:

  • Openness – Jabber protocol is free (from licensing), open,
    public and, moreover, easy to understand; there are many implementations
    servers and clients, as well as open source libraries.
  • Extensibility – the protocol can be extended with XML namespaces
    Jabber to perform required tasks and to provide interoperability support
    between different systems. Generic extensions are developed under control
    Jabber Software Foundation.
  • Decentralized – anyone can run their own server
    Jabber, this will allow organizations and individuals to engage in any experiments
    with IM.
  • Security – any Jabber server can be isolated from the public
    Jabber networks, many of the server implementations use SSL when exchanging
    between client and server, and quite a few clients support encryption using
    PGP / GPG inside the protocol.
