Microprocessor Forum: New Details for AMD Dual-Core Opteron, VIA 64-Bit Processors
The past day brought two interesting messages at once concerning the Microprocessor Forum. First, AMD has revealed some details of its dual-core processors. According to the company, its dual-core processors will be built on the basis of two 64-bit Opteron cores, combined with each other according to the SMP (symmetric multiprocessing programming) scheme. Each core will be provided with 1 MB of L2 cache.
In total, the design of the dual-core Opteron has 205 million. transistors, technological process – 90 nm, SOI (silicon-on-insulator). Due to the reduction of the technical process, the die size will be approximately the same as that of the current version of 64-bit processors, and the interface will be Socket 940. Declared power consumption – 95 W.
In the new, dual-core AMD processor, the concept of an integrated controller of peripheral modules (in particular, memory) will be further developed in the form of AMD Direct Connect Architecture.
